 Most lawyers view the internet and its tools as a "black box" just like the earlier black boxes: - mag card machines, word processors with WordPerfect and Word, and xerox machines with more than three functions ... Their solution has always been "hire the support staff who understands the black box" ... however ... Gary Wolfstone decided in 1996 to learn how to design and maintain his own web site.
Any lawyer or team of lawyers who are launching their own lawfirm in 2024 will face the prospect of spendiong $100,000.00 for the design and hosting of a web site. Gary Wolfstone, on the other hand, spent $10. to launch his web site, and presently he spends less than $10. per month to host and maintain www.wolfstonelaw.com. Mr. Wolfstone advocates that every law student, from the status of 1L onward, should publish his or her own web site.
Mr. Wolfstone has, true to this commitment, acquired a basic familiarity with HTML, Java Script, Freehand 8, Home Site, and PhotoShop. Mr. Wolfstone is his own web designer and accepts the credit (or blame, as the case may be) for the 500 hyperlinks and the roller coaster ride that this site has become. When Mr. Wolfstone first launched his web site, there were approximately 19,000 web sites on the internet. Presently - in 2024 - there are more than 1,092,141,942 websites on the internet, and this site is only one of them. We have reached the point where between 10 and 50 million new web sites are added to the internet each month.
Mr. Wolfstone emphasizes the value of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). If you Google "Seattle trial lawyer" the law offices of Gary L. Wolfstone will come up first! Occasionally, there are a couple of web sites marked "Sponsored" ahead of Gary Wolfstone's web site, but those are people who have purchased premiun space for one day at a time. And for those of you among us who wear the uniform, remember the Charge of the Light Brigade (Alfred Lord Tennyson): "Theirs was not to make reply, Theirs was not to reason why, Theirs was but to do and die."
Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first proposal for the World Wide Web in March 1989. In collaboration with Belgian systems engineer Robert Cailliau, the WWW was formalized as a management proposal in November 1990. The digitized software described a "hypertext project" called "WorldWideWeb or WWW" in which a "web" of "hypertext documents" could be viewed by browsers. Tim Berners-Lee had the first Web server and browser up and running at CERN by the end of 1990. He developed the code for his Web server on a NeXT computer. To avoid it being accidentally switched off, the computer had a hand-written label in red ink: "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!"
Mr. Wolfstone's web site is simple and inexpensive. Gary does not pay any search engine for his space. Mr. Wolfstone's total investment in his web site (design, maintenance and hosting) is less than ten dollars per month. Go figure! If the world wide web is a 100 year revolution, we have only endured the first thirty-five years ... so fasten your seat belts !
